The Details
A closer look at siding in Maryland.
Materials and options we install
Our two flagship siding systems are James Hardie fiber cement and premium CertainTeed vinyl. Hardie is the longest-lasting, most upscale option on the market today. The 5/16-inch thickness delivers deep shadow lines that look like painted wood from the curb, and the factory-applied ColorPlus finish holds color far longer than any field-paint job ever will. We install the full Hardie line, including HardiePlank lap siding, HardieShingle for accent gables, and HardieTrim for window and door surrounds.
On the vinyl side, we install premium CertainTeed Cedar Impressions, Mainstreet and Monogram lines. Today's premium vinyl is dramatically better than the builder-grade product most Maryland homes shipped with in the 1980s and 1990s. Thicker panels, deeper textures, and color-through pigment that does not fade like the older generations did.
Whichever material you choose, we install it over a proper drainage plane: house wrap correctly lapped and taped, flashing details at every penetration, and Z-flashing at horizontal transitions. The siding is the visible part. What is behind it is what keeps water out of your walls.
Why Maryland homes need real siding
Maryland weather is the perfect storm of conditions that destroy cheap siding. Humid summers swell wood-based products. Freeze-thaw cycles in February crack brittle vinyl and pop poorly-driven nails. Wind events drive rain horizontally into any unsealed joint. And the temperature swing from a 95-degree August afternoon to a 25-degree January morning will warp any panel that was not engineered for our climate.
Fiber cement is non-combustible, dimensionally stable through every Maryland season, and engineered to handle wind-driven rain. Premium vinyl with a proper substrate behind it is a strong second choice and a genuinely great fit for many homes. Both are dramatically better than the original siding on a typical 1985 Rockville colonial or a 1990s Gaithersburg split-level.
Our warranty and quality approach
As a James Hardie Contractor Alliance member, we are trained and audited to install Hardie products to manufacturer specification. That is the only way you get the full 30-year non-prorated product warranty and the 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty. CertainTeed vinyl carries a lifetime limited warranty that transfers to subsequent owners.
Every Winfield siding project also carries our own workmanship warranty. We do not sub the install out. The crew running your job works directly for us, and we stand behind the result.
Signs you need new siding
- Visible warping, buckling or panels that have pulled away from the wall.
- Cracks, splits or holes that you can see from the ground.
- Faded, chalky or peeling paint that no longer responds to washing.
- Soft spots, rot or mildew, especially around windows and at ground level.
- Higher energy bills with no other clear cause, or rooms that feel drafty on windy days.
- Wallpaper or interior paint that is bubbling, peeling or developing mildew, which often means moisture is getting behind the siding.
