The Details
A closer look at roofing in Maryland.
Materials and options we install
Most Maryland homes we re-roof end up with architectural (also called dimensional) asphalt shingles. They give you the deepest shadow line, the best wind ratings and the longest warranties of any mainstream shingle on the market. We install GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark as our two flagship systems. Both are rated for 130 mph winds and carry lifetime limited warranties when paired with the matching accessory products.
When a home calls for something more, we install designer shingles like GAF Grand Sequoia or CertainTeed Presidential Shake, standing-seam metal for waterfront homes near Annapolis and the Bay, and synthetic slate and cedar shake for historic Bethesda and Chevy Chase properties where the original material is no longer practical to maintain.
Every roof system we install includes synthetic underlayment, full ice-and-water shield along the eaves and valleys, new step flashing and a balanced ridge-and-soffit ventilation system. Skimping on any of these is the #1 source of premature roof failure in Maryland's climate.
Built for the Maryland climate
Maryland is hard on roofs. Humid Chesapeake summers cook attic spaces past 140°F, February brings freeze-thaw cycles that work moisture deep into shingle seams, and every spring delivers at least one pop-up wind or hail event that ages a roof five years overnight. We've seen documented hail in Olney, Silver Spring, Columbia and Rockville in each of the last three storm seasons.
We design every system around those realities. That means proper attic ventilation to keep shingle temperatures down in summer, ice-and-water shield extended well past code minimum on every eave to handle ice dams, and impact-rated shingles in neighborhoods that have been hit by hail before. The difference between a roof that lasts 17 years and a roof that lasts 27 years is almost never the shingle. It is the install.
Our warranty and quality approach
Because we are GAF Certified and a CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster, we can register your roof for the strongest warranties either manufacturer offers. On most of our installs that includes lifetime non-prorated coverage on materials, transferability to the next homeowner, and extended labor coverage when you choose the upgraded system.
On top of that we add our own workmanship warranty. If anything we installed leaks because of how it was installed, we are back on-site to fix it. Not a sub, not a different crew. The same Winfield team that did the work.
