If your gutters and downspouts are making unusual noises when it rains, there might be something wrong. Here’s what you need to do.
Inspect the Gutter Brackets and Appendages
If not maintained regularly, your gutters can develop damage that might compromise their performance. The noise you hear when it rains may come from a loose bracket or screw. Check that the screws are tight around the brackets and appendages.
See If Your Gutters Are Clogged
Sometimes the noise from your gutters and downspouts can come from lodged debris like leaves and small branches. You can attempt to unclog your gutters yourself, or you can hire professional roofers for a thorough cleaning.
Check If Your Downspouts Are Angled Properly
Your gutters and downspouts may look like they’re perfectly level. But when you look at your gutters closely, they should be at a slight angle, with a slope of 0.25 inches for every 10 feet. This allows gravity to pull the collected water toward the downspout, preventing it from pooling on your roof.
The downspouts should be tilted gently to propel water into a garden or water basin at a safe distance away from your home. If the downspout is too rigid, water can fall into the corners, creating the annoying dripping noise you may be constantly hearing when it rains. To fix this, you may need to replace the bottom part of your downspout with one that has a wider angle.
